Mild and Plug-in Hybrid. What Is The Difference, and How Do They Work?
Today’s automotive landscape features diverse powertrains
beyond the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE). While ICE remains
prevalent, the rise of fully electric vehicles, hybrids, and hydrogen-powered
cars marks a significant shift. This article explores the advantages and
disadvantages of hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.
A hybrid (HEV) combines a standard gasoline engine with an
electric motor and a small battery, charged through regenerative braking. This
setup assists the ICE, offering a combined power output. Notable early models
like the Toyota Prius have paved the way for hybrids from luxury brands such as
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.
In contrast, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is more complex. It
also has a gasoline engine but features a larger battery that must be
externally charged. PHEVs can operate solely on electric power for 18 to 30
miles, making them suitable for short commutes without using fuel. Popular
PHEVs include the KIA Niro and Toyota RAV4 Prime.
Choosing between HEVs and PHEVs depends on factors like
budget, location, and driving habits. HEVs are generally more affordable due to
their simpler technology. However, PHEVs can offer significant long-term
savings on fuel by driving short distances on electric power alone, provided
there's access to charging infrastructure. As the auto industry progresses towards fully electric vehicles,
both HEVs and PHEVs may eventually become less prominent.
